Common Cash Register Problems

Error codes & display messages

Start with the exact SAM4S model.

The same-looking message can mean different things on different register families. Choose the model family first, then use only the error information published for that family.

Protect the programming and sales data. Do not perform an initial clear, RAM clear, memory clear, program clear, initialization or factory reset as a first troubleshooting step. Those procedures can erase programming or sales data.
Published error table available

SPS-500 Series

The manufacturer publishes a numbered default error-message table and separate definitions/safe first checks. Sites can reprogram the displayed wording, so use the error number when available.

ER-900 / ER-900E

Use the exact-model help/manual instead. The manual's “Error Correct” reference is a key function, not an error-code table.

SPS-300 Series

Use SPS-300 model-family help and the correct manual. Do not borrow SPS-500 error numbers for an SPS-320, SPS-340 or SPS-345.

Model not sure?

Identify the register first

Check the front label, manual cover, service sticker, keyboard sheet, receipt header or the label on the back/bottom. A photo is useful if the model number is hard to read.

Routed, not a code table

Payment or terminal communication

A decline, a terminal that stops responding, or a station that loses communication is usually not a register error code. It depends on the processor, the payment device, the network and the software version, and the exact message matters.

E00 SEQUENCE ERROR
E1 PLU NO DATA
E2 CLERK ERROR
E3 AMOUNT COUNT OVER
E4 TIME AND DATE
E5 LIMIT OVER
E6 REQ. DRAWER
E7 CONSOL OVER
E8 REQ. SUBTOTAL
E9 NO VOID PLU
E10 REQ. PRESET VALUE
E11 REQ. OPEN VALUE
E12 REQ. AMOUNT
E13 INVALID FUNCTION
E14 EJ FULL
E15 REQ. CASH DECLARATION
E16 REQ. Z REPORT
E17 INACTIVE
E20 REQ. MODE PASSWORD
E21 STOP PRINTING FOR COOLING OF PRINTER
PER RECEIPT PRINTER PAPER END

Safe first checks only. E14 (EJ full) and E16 (Z report required) are resolved by taking the appropriate report - take and keep the report before clearing anything, because clearing removes the sales data. E21 is a thermal print head cooling protection and clears on its own once the printer cools. PER means the receipt paper roll has run out. Do not advise an initial clear, memory clear or initialisation for any of these codes: the manual notes an initial clear may be necessary as part of servicing, and it is destructive to programming and data.
Still stuck after the safe checks? Start a support request first. We will identify the exact model/problem and check any applicable SAM4sDirect purchase or support coverage before determining whether paid help is required.

Help with a register you already own

You do not need to have bought the register from us.

We take paid remote support and programming work on SAM4S registers regardless of where the machine came from. That includes registers bought from another dealer, bought used, inherited with a business, or left without dealer support. Tell us the model and what is happening, and we will tell you honestly whether we can help remotely.

Start a support request

Support — something is not working

Choose support when the register is misbehaving and you need it diagnosed or corrected.

  • The register is not operating correctly
  • An error message or code needs diagnosing
  • A printer, cash drawer or peripheral is not responding
  • Questions about operating the register day to day
  • Working out whether hardware has actually failed

Programming — something needs changing

Choose programming when the register works but the configuration is wrong or out of date.

  • PLU or item changes
  • Department changes
  • Tax programming
  • Receipt header changes
  • Keyboard or menu changes
  • Larger register setup or configuration projects
Bought the register from SAM4sDirect or think you may already have support coverage? Start the support intake before buying a block so we can check the purchase record and any applicable coverage first.

One-time technical support

2 options

Buy a block of remote time for troubleshooting and diagnosis. Billed in 30-minute increments.

Ongoing coverage

1 option

Annual coverage for one applicable register or system, during normal support hours.

What to send us so the session is productive

What is happeningThe exact error text, or the specific change you need made.
Does it currently operate?Whether the register powers on and rings a sale at all.
Existing support plan?Whether you already have an active agreement with us.
Where it came fromUseful context only. Buying elsewhere does not exclude you.

Add these details in the notes at checkout, or send them first if you would rather we confirm the work is possible before you pay.

Support hours Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM–5:00 PM Eastern, excluding holidays. We do not offer or advertise 24/7 support.
Not everything can be fixed remotelySome faults are mechanical or need parts. If remote work will not solve it, we will say so rather than bill for time.
Programming is separate Programming is a distinct service from troubleshooting, and is not automatically included in a support plan.
Needing help more than occasionally? If you expect several sessions in a year, an annual support plan may work out more economical than buying individual blocks of time. Compare the plan against what you are likely to use — it is not the right answer for everyone.

Clear help, clear scope

Know what kind of help you need before the request is routed.

Sales guidance, general support and register programming are related, but they are not the same service. Giving us the exact model and the job you need done helps the request reach the right path faster.

Buying or replacing

Register selection comes first.

Use the Register Finder or send us the old model, business type, checkout workflow and peripherals. We can then narrow the equipment before discussing programming or payment options.

Programming

New-register setup is included; later changes are separate.

Standard programming and setup are included with this register. Tax, departments, items, prices, clerks, keyboard layout and receipt details are set up with your register. Custom work beyond the standard setup is quoted separately. Programming changes to a register already in service - new items, a tax change, clerk or receipt changes, peripheral, scanner, payment or network setup - are paid work, booked by the job.

Support / troubleshooting

Start with the exact model and symptom.

Send the model, exact error or symptom, what changed, and useful photos. If the register is down, say “register down” in the request so the urgency is clear during support hours.

Parts & accessories

Compatibility comes before the order.

Compatibility depends on the exact register model, interface, cable, firmware and programming. We verify the correct configuration before recommending an accessory.

Before resets, initialization or memory clear:Preserve useful reports and programming whenever possible. Broad resets can erase information that may be difficult to recreate.

Already own a SAM4s? Whether you bought it from us or somewhere else, or the dealer who sold it is no longer available, tell us what you have and what you need. We can help you work through programming, supplies, support, whether the register is worth keeping, and whether it makes sense to separately review what you pay for credit card processing. Start with what you own.
