SAM4S ER-260EJ / ER-265EJ Help

Need help with a SAM4S ER-260EJ or ER-265EJ? Start with the exact model label and the problem or programming change you need. These compact traditional registers are straightforward when the correct model-specific procedure is used, but tax, item and printer settings should not be changed by guessing from another SAM4S model.

Identify the exact model: ER-260EJ or ER-265EJ

Read the complete model number from the identification label rather than judging from the front panel. In our catalog the two models in this pair are configured the same way except for the keyboard:

• ER-260EJ — raised-key keyboard, single-station receipt printer, electronic journal.
• ER-265EJ — flat keyboard, single-station receipt printer, electronic journal.

Side by side, with the rows they share collapsed into one: compare the ER-260EJ and ER-265EJ.

"EJ" refers to the electronic journal, meaning the register keeps an electronic record of transactions instead of printing a second paper journal roll. An electronic journal is a recordkeeping feature, not a second print station.

Because the keyboard differs between the two, a procedure or key description written for one of the pair may not match the layout on the other. Confirm which model you have before following programming steps, and confirm it again before ordering a keyboard sheet, till insert or other accessory.

Common ER-260EJ / ER-265EJ help

• Tax-rate and taxable-status changes
• Department and PLU programming
• Price changes
• Receipt header and footer changes
• Date and time
• Clerk/cashier and tender functions
• Paper-feed and printing problems
• Cash-drawer operation
• X and Z reports

Departments, PLUs and prices

When a price or item rings incorrectly, identify whether the sale is using a department or a PLU before changing programming. Record the current value first and test one known item before making a large batch of changes.

Tax programming

A wrong tax result can come from the programmed rate, the tax status of the department/PLU, or both. Confirm the business's current tax requirement before changing the register and test a known taxable and non-taxable item afterward.

Receipt and printer troubleshooting

Confirm the correct paper for the exact model, roll installation, cover closure and feed path before assuming the printer mechanism has failed. Blank, faint or feeding receipts can have different causes, so avoid replacing parts until the paper and setup are verified.

Cash drawer problems

If the drawer does not open, check the lock position, drawer cable and normal tender/no-sale operation first. A drawer issue can be mechanical, cable-related, electrical or programming-related.

X and Z reports

Use a read-only report when you only need to inspect totals. Before running a resetting/closing report, understand what it resets and whether the business still needs the current period totals.

Preserving the existing programming

Before any significant change, capture what the register is set up to do today. Print the reports the owner relies on, and write down tax rates, key departments and prices, receipt text and clerk settings. Whether a supported backup or PC utility exists depends on the exact model and interface, so confirm that against your own model rather than assuming one is available.

Before a reset or memory clear

Do not initialize or clear memory simply to troubleshoot an unknown problem. A destructive procedure can erase tax rates, departments, PLUs, receipt messages and other setup. Understand exactly what a procedure clears, and what it would take to rebuild that programming, before running it. Preserve the existing program and useful reports whenever possible.

Repair, reprogram or replace?

Programming, paper and drawer issues can often be corrected without replacing the register. Replacement becomes more attractive when the printer, display, keyboard or main electronics are failing, or when the business now needs more items, stronger reporting, barcode workflows, networking or integrated payment options.

Frequently asked questions

Can you help if I bought the register somewhere else?

Yes. One-time remote support and programming are available for supported SAM4S equipment even if it was bought from another dealer, purchased used or inherited with a business.

Are ER-260EJ and ER-265EJ procedures interchangeable?

Treat them as separate. They share a family and are configured alike apart from the keyboard, but key positions differ, so use the document for the model you actually have.

What is the difference between ER-260EJ and ER-265EJ?

The keyboard, and only the keyboard. The ER-260EJ has a raised-key keyboard whose large keys are easy to read and to find by touch. The ER-265EJ has a flat, spill-resistant keyboard that wipes clean, and its key sheet under the overlay is easily exchanged when the menu changes. Both give you 31 programmable key locations, of which 15 are keyboard PLU keys, and both are the same price. Printing, item capacity, displays, ports, scanning and the card-payment route are identical.

How many items can the ER-260EJ / ER-265EJ hold?

Up to 3,200 price look-ups (PLUs) in internal memory, and up to 8,000 when an SD card is used for PLU storage. The electronic journal follows the same pattern: up to 6,900 lines in internal memory, and up to 30,000 with SD card storage. Both models hold the same number of items.

Can these registers use a barcode scanner?

Yes. The USB port is documented for a scanner, and not-found PLU registration builds the item file as you scan. Which scanner is verified with which register is listed on the scanner page, because a USB connection by itself does not prove compatibility.

Which scanner fits which register

Can they use integrated credit-card processing?

Yes, as an option. Both models support semi-integrated EMV credit, debit, gift card and EBT processing over the Ethernet port, using Datacap with an appropriate PIN pad and a persistent internet connection, and no card information is stored in the register. An SD card must be fitted, because integrated payment stores transaction records so they can be recalled by invoice number for tip adjustment or voiding. It is optional: you can buy the register and keep your current processor.

How integrated processing works

Should I reset the register if it is acting strangely?

Not as a first troubleshooting step. Identify the exact error or symptom and preserve the current programming before any destructive procedure.

Can I reuse my existing cash drawer or other accessories with a replacement?

Possibly, but compatibility should be verified by exact device, cable, interface and replacement model rather than by connector appearance alone.

What should I send for support?

Send the exact model label, a photo of the keyboard, the error or requested programming change, and photos or model numbers for any connected equipment involved.
