1D or 2D barcode scanning?

A 1D scanner is commonly used for traditional linear barcodes such as UPC and Code 128. A 2D scanner can also read matrix-style codes such as QR codes. The scanner still has to support the symbology your business uses and communicate correctly with the register or POS system.

Why a scanner can beep but not ring an item

The scanner only reads and sends the barcode. The register still needs a matching PLU or item record with its price, tax status and description. A scanner that reads a label successfully but rings nothing may have a communication, formatting or item-programming problem rather than a hardware failure.

        Match the scanner to the barcode, interface and register configuration.

        A scanner can physically plug in and still be incompatible. Start with the exact register or POS model, the barcodes being scanned and the required connection.

        1D or 2D scanning

        UPC and Code 128 are common 1D barcodes. QR codes, Data Matrix and many mobile-screen codes require a 2D imager.

        Interface matters

        USB HID, USB serial and true serial connections are not interchangeable in every system. Confirm what the register or software supports.

        Programming matters too

        Some registers require scanner-port, baud-rate or barcode settings before the device will communicate correctly.

        Compatibility depends on the exact register model, interface, cable, firmware and programming. We verify the correct configuration before recommending an accessory.         Receipt printers Thermal printers for the customer receipt. Confirm USB, serial or Ethernet against what is actually driving the printer.
