Buying a restaurant cash register

  • Keyboard. A flat programmable keyboard puts menu items and modifiers under one sealed surface, which suits staff ringing named items rather than scanning them.
  • Kitchen printing. A kitchen printer is a separate external printer, not a register's second built-in station. See which registers document a kitchen printer.
  • Cash drawer. Every current SAM4S register we sell includes a cash drawer.

Cash registers with a kitchen printer

A kitchen printer is a separate, external printer in the prep area, usually an impact printer because thermal paper fades in heat and steam. A register sold as having "two printers" has a second built-in station inside the register — it does not print in the kitchen.

ER-900E Series

CRS documents a serial connection from the ER-900E Series to the SNBC BTP-M300A, an impact printer used as a remote or kitchen printer. The exact cable, port programming and workflow are confirmed for your setup before ordering.

SPS-300 Series

The SPS-300 manual lists a kitchen printer among its supported peripheral types, set up as a remote printer on a serial port. The printer model must be on the register's supported list, or its emulation confirmed, before it is treated as supported.

Which register suits this restaurant?

A few steps, starting from the fact that you run food service. Kitchen printing is asked about properly rather than assumed, and you will end with either a package you can buy or a short list of what we still need to confirm.

What this asks you

  1. Your business type — retail, food service, liquor, convenience, grocery or a service counter. It decides which registers are worth showing.
  2. The register — raised-key suits item and barcode entry; flat keyboards suit menu-driven ordering.
  3. Barcode scanning — including whether you already own a scanner we should check.
  4. Printing — the receipt printer, the second built-in station, an external receipt printer and a kitchen printer are four different things, and only the last one prints in a prep area.
  5. Other peripherals — a cash drawer is already included with every current register we sell, so it is listed, not sold to you again.
  6. Programming — departments, items, taxes, clerks, tenders and menu keys, quoted before any work starts.
  7. Card processing — optional. You do not need to change processors to buy a register from us.

At the end you get one of three answers: a package you can buy, a package to configure, or verification required — which means one part of the combination is not proven yet and we will confirm it before you spend anything. We would rather tell you that than sell you a scanner that turns out not to talk to your register.

Paying for the equipment

How would you like to handle the purchase?

Tell us how you would prefer to handle the cost of the new equipment and we will bring the right options to the quote. This is about the equipment you are buying — it is separate from how you take card payments, and you do not need to change processor to ask about any of it.

Financing and leasing are different things

Financing means you are buying the equipment and paying for it over time. Leasing means you are paying to use it under the terms of a lease, and ownership at the end is whatever that lease says it is — sometimes a purchase option, sometimes a return. We will always tell you which one a quote is, and we will not describe a lease as if it were a purchase.

What we can tell you today. We do not publish rates, terms or payment amounts, because those come from the finance or leasing provider and depend on the amount, the equipment and their own review of your business. Ask and we will tell you exactly what is available for your purchase, in writing, before you commit to anything. If nothing suitable is available, we will say so.

Flat keyboard, raised keyboard or touchscreen?

Flat programmable keyboards are often a natural fit for restaurants because many food and beverage items can be labeled directly on the key sheet. Raised-key registers can still work for simpler counters with fewer preset items. Touchscreen systems become more attractive when the menu, modifiers, employee controls or reporting outgrow a traditional register.

Kitchen and remote printing

If orders must print away from the front counter, tell us exactly where each item should print and what printer equipment already exists. Kitchen-printing compatibility depends on the register model, printer model, interface, cable, port and programming. A printer that connects physically is not automatically compatible.

Replacing an older restaurant register?

Restaurant replacements should preserve the workflow employees rely on: flat-key menu layout, modifier sequence, kitchen routing, guest checks or tabs, receipt format and closeout reports. An old model number alone is not enough to choose the right replacement.

Programming a restaurant register

Restaurant programming can include menu items, prices, tax setup, departments/groups, flat-key assignments, modifiers, sizes, employees, tender keys, receipt messages and kitchen-routing instructions. The exact capabilities and programming method vary by SAM4S family.

Traditional restaurant register or SAM4POS?

A traditional SAM4S register can be a good fit for a smaller operation that needs fast preset-item entry, dependable printing and straightforward reporting. SAM4POS or another fuller restaurant POS is usually the better direction when the business needs a more flexible touchscreen menu, detailed modifiers, advanced table/bar workflows, stronger reporting, multiple stations or integrations beyond a traditional register.

Payment setup

You do not have to change processors to buy a restaurant register. A separate credit-card terminal can remain separate. Do I need a flat keyboard?

Not always, but flat keyboards are often preferred for menu-driven food service because they provide many labeled programmable positions. The right choice depends on menu size and how employees ring orders.

Can a SAM4S register print to the kitchen?

Some SAM4S configurations can support remote or kitchen printing. The exact register, printer, interface and programming must be verified together before equipment is ordered.

Can you transfer my old restaurant programming?

Sometimes information can be preserved, exported or recreated, but a transfer should not be promised from model names alone. Send the old model, program reports or backup if available, keyboard layout and target register for review.

When should I move to POS instead of another register?

Consider SAM4POS or a fuller restaurant POS when the operation needs more flexible menu management, multiple stations, advanced employee controls, table/bar workflows, integrations or reporting that exceeds a traditional register.

What cash register is a good fit for a restaurant?

Start with the restaurant workflow, then choose the register. A small counter-service restaurant may do well with a flat-key SAM4S electronic cash register, while a menu with many modifiers, multiple stations, table/bar workflows or advanced reporting usually points toward SAM4POS or a fuller restaurant POS.
