Receipt Printers for SAM4S Registers & SAM4POS

Four different things get called "the printer", and only two of them are ever a purchase. Getting these mixed up is the single most expensive misunderstanding in a restaurant fit-out, so it is worth two minutes.

What is the difference between a receipt printer and a journal printer?

The receipt printer is built into the register and prints what the customer takes away. Every current SAM4S register has one.

The journal printer is the second station on a dual-station register. It prints an internal audit roll that stays in the machine. It is not a second receipt printer, and it is not a printer you can put anywhere.

So a register described as having "two printers" has a receipt station and a journal station. Both are inside the box.

Can a SAM4S cash register print in a kitchen?

With the right setup, yes — but never from the built-in stations. Kitchen printing always needs an external printer, placed in the prep area and connected separately.

This is the part worth being blunt about: a dual-station register does not give you a kitchen printer. If a supplier has told you the second printer covers the kitchen, that is wrong, and it is a mistake usually discovered on a Friday night.

Can I connect an external receipt printer?

Often, yes. A separate receipt printer is useful for a second counter, a back office or a faster station. It connects to a port on the register and needs the port programming to match.

Whether a specific printer works with a specific register is something we confirm rather than assume. A shared interface name — both say "serial" — tells you almost nothing: on the ER-900 and ER-900E, two of the serial ports are DB-9 and two are RJ-45 on the same machine.

Which kitchen printer works with my SAM4S register?

Kitchen printers are normally impact rather than thermal, because thermal paper fades in heat and steam and a ticket over the grill has to stay readable.

We stock impact printers documented at ER-900E family level, which is a genuine starting point and not the same as a confirmed pairing. No exact printer-and-register combination is currently marked verified in our records, so we check yours before recommending it. Does kitchen printing require programming?

Yes, and this is the step people expect to be automatic. Connecting a printer does not route anything to it.

The register has to be told which items print where: menu or item routing, departments or categories, the printer destination, and the port settings for the device. Until that is programmed, a kitchen printer sits there doing nothing.

Printing to more than one prep area

Sending different items to different printers — drinks to the bar, food to the grill — is a routing capability, not just a second printer. Whether a particular register can do it depends on the exact model and its software, and we will not assume it. If you need it, tell us and we will confirm what your register can actually do before you buy anything.

Choosing by print method, connection and paper

  • Thermal: fast and quiet, for customer receipts. Not for a hot prep area.
  • Impact: slower and noisier, survives heat and steam, prints duplicates. The usual kitchen choice.
  • Network: useful for shared or remote printing where it is supported.

Confirm the interface, the cable, the paper width and whether the printer also needs to open a cash drawer.

Check compatibility

A printer almost always needs programming on both sides: the register's port set to the right device function and baud, and the printer set to match. We do that with you rather than leaving you with a manual. Cable part numbers are not published by CRS, so we confirm the cable before anything ships.

Receipt printers are not universal. The right model depends on what is driving the printer and what the business needs printed.

Thermal vs impact

Direct thermal printers use heat-sensitive paper and no ribbon. Impact printers use ribbon and are still useful where multipart or kitchen-style printing is required.

USB, serial or Ethernet

The connection must match the register, POS terminal or network. A driver-supported USB printer for a PC POS system may not work directly on a traditional register.

Paper, cutter & drawer

Confirm paper width, roll diameter, auto-cutter needs and whether the cash drawer is kicked from the printer.

Which printer do you actually need?

The answer depends on the register and on what has to print where. A few steps and you will know which of the four printers you need, and what we still have to confirm.

What this asks you

  1. Your business type — retail, food service, liquor, convenience, grocery or a service counter. It decides which registers are worth showing.
  2. The register — raised-key suits item and barcode entry; flat keyboards suit menu-driven ordering.
  3. Barcode scanning — including whether you already own a scanner we should check.
  4. Printing — the receipt printer, the internal journal station, an external receipt printer and a kitchen printer are four different things, and only the last one prints in a prep area.
  5. Other peripherals — a cash drawer is already included with every current register we sell, so it is listed, not sold to you again.
  6. Programming — departments, items, taxes, clerks, tenders and menu keys, quoted before any work starts.
  7. Card processing — optional. You do not need to change processors to buy a register from us.

At the end you get one of three answers: a package you can buy, a package to configure, or verification required — which means one part of the combination is not proven yet and we will confirm it before you spend anything. We would rather tell you that than sell you a scanner that turns out not to talk to your register.
