Identify the exact NR model

"NR-500" and "NR-510" are used loosely to describe several registers sold over a number of years, so the family name is not enough to pick a procedure, a supply or a replacement. Read the complete model number from the identification label, including any letters after the digits, because those letters are what distinguish the configurations.

The two current NR models we sell are configured identically apart from the keyboard:

• NR-510RBE — raised-key keyboard, single-station receipt printer, electronic journal, Ethernet.
• NR-510BE — flat keyboard, single-station receipt printer, electronic journal, Ethernet.

An electronic journal means the register keeps an electronic record of transactions rather than printing a second paper journal roll. It is a recordkeeping feature, not a second print station.

If your label reads NR-500E, or an NR-510 variant not listed above, you have an earlier configuration. It may still be fully supportable, but treat instructions written for the current models as unverified for it until the exact model is confirmed.

Before changing a large item file, determine how the existing register uses departments, PLUs and barcodes. Test changes on a small number of known items and preserve the current setup whenever possible.

Reports and electronic journal

Know whether the report you are running is read-only or resetting before using it. If you are troubleshooting missing totals, identify the report period, cashier filters, refunds, voids, discounts and tender activity before repeatedly closing periods.

Preserving programming before you change it

Capture the current setup before any significant change: print the reports the owner relies on and record tax settings, key departments and prices, receipt text, clerk setup and anything unusual about the keyboard. Whether a supported backup or PC utility applies depends on the exact model, software and interface, so confirm that against your own model rather than assuming.

Safe troubleshooting first

Before resetting the register, check power, paper installation, operating mode, connected devices and the exact error message. If the problem began after programming or connecting a device, document exactly what changed.

Avoid initialization or memory-clear procedures unless the correct model-specific procedure is understood and the existing program has been protected. Know exactly what the procedure clears and what rebuilding that programming would involve before you run it.

Can you support an NR register that was purchased elsewhere?

Yes. One-time remote support and programming are available for supported SAM4S equipment even if it was purchased from another dealer, bought used or inherited with a business.

Is an NR-500E the same as an NR-510?

No. Treat them as different registers and work from the document that matches the complete model number on your label.

What is the difference between NR-510BE and NR-510RBE?

The keyboard, and only the keyboard. The NR-510BE has a flat, spill-resistant keyboard with 90 keys and 75 programmable locations, which suits a counter ringing a large menu from a preset key for each item. The NR-510RBE has a raised-key keyboard with 48 keys and 32 programmable locations, of which 12 are keyboard PLU keys that act like traditional departments for open-priced entries, or can be set as preset-price keys. Printing, displays, item capacity, ports, scanning and the card-payment route are the same on both.

How many items can the NR-510 hold?

Over 3,200 price look-ups (PLUs), and up to 8,000 when an SD card is used for PLU storage. Both models hold the same number of items. The keyboard difference changes how many items can be reached by a dedicated key, not how many the register can store.

Can the NR-510 use a barcode scanner?

Yes. The USB port is documented for a scanner, and not-found PLU registration lets the item file be built as items are scanned. Which scanner is verified with which register is listed on the scanner page, because a USB connection by itself does not prove compatibility.

Can the NR-510 use integrated credit-card processing?

Yes, as an option. Both models support semi-integrated credit, debit and gift card processing over the Ethernet port, using Datacap with an appropriate PIN pad and a persistent internet connection, and no card information is stored in the register. It is optional: you can buy the register and keep your current processor.

What should I send for faster help?

Send the exact model label, a photo of the keyboard, the error message or requested programming change, a sample receipt when relevant, and model numbers/photos for connected scanners, printers, drawers or payment equipment.

Can I keep my existing scanner or cash drawer if I replace the register?

Possibly. Each peripheral and cable should be verified against the replacement model before ordering.

Should I clear memory to fix an error?

Not as a general troubleshooting step. Memory-clear procedures can erase valuable programming and should only be used when the exact procedure and consequences are understood.
