SAM4S ER-180U Help, Manual & Programming
Need help with a SAM4S ER-180U? Start with the exact model label and the task or message you are working on. The ER-180U is a compact register, so many questions come down to what it does and does not connect to.

What the ER-180U is
The ER-180U is a compact commercial cash register for straightforward counter checkout. It has a 48-position raised-key keyboard, a two-inch thermal receipt printer, 16 programmable departments, 500 open or preset PLUs, up to 10 clerks, an electronic journal and a cash drawer with 4 bill and 4 coin compartments. It is a traditional electronic cash register, not a touchscreen POS.
Common ER-180U questions
Where is the ER-180U manual?
The ER-180U Operator and Programming Manual (v1.8) and the product brochure are in our manual center, which keeps each document matched to the exact model it covers. Manuals for other SAM4S families use different keys and program numbers, so do not follow them for an ER-180U.
How do I program prices, PLUs, departments and tax on an ER-180U?
Use the programming sections of the ER-180U manual rather than steps written for another SAM4S model, because program numbers and key sequences do not carry across families. Before changing anything, print the reports you rely on and write down your tax settings, department prices and receipt text, then test one known item after each change.
If you would rather not do it yourself, remote programming and setup is available even for a register bought elsewhere. Buy remote support or programming
How do I close out the day on an ER-180U?
Run the report the manual specifies for your end-of-day process, and know whether it is a read-only report or a resetting one before you run it. A Z report closes a reporting period and clears totals as it prints, so keep the printout. The register can also stop and display REQ. Z REPORT until one is taken.
What do ER-180U error messages mean?
The ER-180U manual lists 21 numbered error conditions (E00 to E21) plus a paper-end message, such as E14 EJ FULL, E16 REQ. Z REPORT, E20 REQ. MODE PASSWORD and E21 STOP PRINTING FOR COOLING OF PRINTER. Our error-code guide explains eight of them, including EJ FULL, REQ. Z REPORT, REQ. MODE PASSWORD, REQ. CASH DECLARATION, SEQUENCE ERROR and the paper-end message. It gives each meaning and a safe first check, and notes where the manual itself does not define a message.
What receipt paper does the ER-180U use?
It uses 58 mm (2.25 in) thermal receipt paper. Impact or carbonless paper is not suitable for this printer.
Can the ER-180U use a barcode scanner, cash drawer, printer or card terminal?
No. The ER-180U manual documents no RS-232C serial ports, no USB peripheral port and no device programming for a scanner, scale, pole display, remote printer or coin dispenser, so plan on the built-in printer and drawer only. It has no Ethernet and does not offer integrated card payments.
If you need any of those, the ER-260EJ and ER-265EJ add Ethernet and a USB port for a scanner. Compare current SAM4S registers · Use the register finder
Why is my ER-180U asking for a Z report or a password?
REQ. Z REPORT means a Z report must be taken before the register will continue, and REQ. MODE PASSWORD means the mode you entered is password protected. Take and keep the Z report, or ask the owner or manager for the password, and do not clear memory to get past either one because that erases programming and data.
Should I reset or clear the memory on an ER-180U?
Not as a general fix. An initial clear or memory clear can erase tax rates, departments, PLUs and receipt text, so first identify the exact message or symptom and protect your current setup.
Replacing an older ER-180 or ER-180TB
Is the ER-180U the current replacement for the ER-180 and ER-180TB?
The ER-180U is the current compact SAM4S register in the CRS catalog, which lists the ER-180TB as discontinued. It has 16 departments, 500 PLUs, up to 10 clerks and a 58 mm thermal printer. We do not hold manuals for the older ER-180 or ER-180TB, so compare your item count, clerk count and printing needs with those figures, and check anything connected to your old register, before ordering.
See the Replacement Center entry · View the ER-180U
Can the programming from my old ER-180 be transferred to an ER-180U?
Do not assume it can. We recommend reprogramming the new register rather than attempting a direct memory transfer, and we confirm your connected equipment with you before you order.

Can SAM4sDirect program the ER-180U before it ships?
Yes. On the ER-180U page, choose Programmed & Ready and our team adds standard setup before it ships: typically tax rates, departments and PLUs, prices, clerks, receipt header and keyboard configuration, plus a basic configuration review. Special work such as data transfers or large item lists can take more time, which is quoted separately.

Is there help paying for a register?
Eligible approved merchants may qualify for up to $500 in merchant-processing rebate value toward eligible equipment, programming, setup or approved switching costs. Qualification depends on processing volume, approval, program availability and the final package, and no processor change is required to buy a register.

Need ER-180U help?
You can purchase one-time remote support or programming even if the register was purchased elsewhere, subject to the model and whether the request can be supported remotely.

Which manual do you need?
Operating a register and reprogramming it are two different documents.
Find the complete model number on the identification label first, then look for the document that matches the job you are doing. Registers that look alike can use different procedures, so a manual for a neighbouring model is not a substitute. If only one document exists for your model, that is normal for some families.

- Day-to-day selling: ringing items, tenders, voids, opening the drawer, changing paper, and running the reports a manager needs.
- Programming or service manual
- Setup and changes: taxes, departments, PLUs, prices, receipt messages, clerks, keyboard functions and system options.
- Quick reference or setup sheet
- A short guide for first installation and the most common daily tasks. Useful, but rarely enough for programming changes.
- PC utility documentation
- Only relevant if your model is supported by a PC tool and you have the matching cable or interface. Confirm the model before assuming a utility applies.
How paid help works
Straightforward remote support, billed by the block.
Remote support and programming are sold as time blocks, so you only pay for the work the register actually needs. We do not require a service contract, and we do not turn away a register because it was bought from another dealer, bought used, or came with the business.
- $100 per hour for remote support and programming
- $50 for a 30-minute block
- Support hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern - there is no 24/7 emergency line
- No contract required; ongoing coverage is available separately
- You do not need to have bought the register from us
What to send us
These are the same details the checkout asks for when you buy a support or programming block, so nothing is wasted.
- Exact model from the label
- Serial number if visible
- Photo of the keyboard
- What the register is doing now
- The change or fix you need
- Connected scanner / drawer / printer models
- Recent changes to the register
