SAM4S ER-380 / ER-390 / ER-650 Help, Manuals & Replacement
Need help with a SAM4S ER-380, ER-390 or ER-650? These are older SAM4S registers that we no longer sell, but we can still help you find the right manual, support the programming you have, or choose a current replacement. Start with the complete model number on the label, including any letters after the digits.

Identify the exact model
The documents we hold are grouped by family: ER-380 and ER-380M, ER-390M, and ER-650 and ER-650R. The ER-655 and ER-655II are impact-printer variants that need a separate printer and workflow check, so tell us the full label if you have one. Procedures are not interchangeable between these families or with newer SAM4S registers.
Manuals we publish for these registers
Where are the ER-380, ER-390 and ER-650 manuals?
Our manual center lists the ER-380 / ER-380M Operator and Programming Manual (v2.10), the ER-390M Operator and Programming Manual (v1.13), the ER-380M / ER-390M / ER-5200M Integrated Payment guide (v2.9), the ER-650 / ER-650R Operation and Program Manual (v2.6, 2013) and the ER-650 Series Integrated Payment guide (v2.10). Use the one that matches your exact model.
Programming and everyday questions
How do I program prices, PLUs and tax on an ER-380, ER-390 or ER-650?
Follow the programming sections of the manual for your exact model, not steps written for a different SAM4S register, because program numbers and key sequences do not carry across families. Before you change anything, print the reports you rely on and write down your tax settings, department and PLU prices and receipt text, then test one known item after each change.
If you would rather not do it yourself, one-time remote support and programming is available even for a register bought elsewhere. Buy remote support or programming
Should I reset or clear the memory on one of these registers?
Not as a general fix. A memory clear or initialization can erase tax rates, departments, PLUs and receipt text, so identify the exact symptom first and keep your current program and reports until you know what a procedure erases and what rebuilding it would take.
What do the error messages mean?
Message meanings differ by model, and we have not published an ER-380, ER-390 or ER-650 error table, so do not read a code across from another register. Check the message against your model's manual and send us the exact wording and what you were doing when it appeared.
Send us the message and your model
Can I add a scanner, drawer, kitchen printer or card terminal?
It depends on the exact model and what its manual documents. The ER-390M manual lists two RS-232C ports, a ten-position pop-up rear display, an optional internal magnetic card reader, and connection to a scale, kitchen printer, coin dispenser, pole display or DataTran integrated payment appliance. The ER-380 has one RS-232C port and the ER-380M has two. Each device still has to be matched by exact model, port and cable, and a connector that looks right does not prove compatibility. Tell us what you want to connect and we will check it against your model.

Replacing an ER-380, ER-390 or ER-650
Is the ER-390M discontinued, and what replaces it?
We no longer sell the ER-390M, and the CRS catalog lists it as discontinued. Based on the documented features, the closest current fit is the flat-keyboard ER-920E: both are flat-keyboard, single-printer registers with an electronic journal, and the ER-920E adds Ethernet and a much larger item file. Confirm your keyboard layout, scale, kitchen printer and card setup before you order.
View the ER-920E · Compare the ER-390M and ER-920E
What replaces an ER-380 or ER-380M?
There is no verified one-model answer yet, because the ER-380 and ER-380M keyboard type is not documented in our sources. Send us a photo of your keyboard and the model label and we will match it to a current register rather than guess.
What replaces an ER-650 or ER-650R?
The ER-650 manual describes a flat 98-position keyboard on the ER-650 and a raised 64-position keyboard on the ER-650R. For an ER-650, the recommended current register is the SPS-320, which has a flat keyboard and a receipt printer. For an ER-650R, it is the SPS-345, which has a raised keyboard and separate receipt and journal printers. For an ER-655 or ER-655II we confirm the printer and workflow first, and we confirm connected devices and programming for all of them before you order.

Can the programming from my old register be moved to a new one?
Do not assume it can. For the ER-390M, a transfer to the ER-920E is not verified, and we do not promise an automatic conversion for any of these registers. Your item and department data, keyboard layout, taxes and connected devices decide what can be transferred and what has to be rebuilt, so keep your reports and settings and let us review the scope.
Can SAM4sDirect program the replacement before it ships?
Yes. On a current register page, choose Programmed & Ready and our team adds standard setup before it ships: typically tax rates, departments and PLUs, prices, clerks, keyboard layout and receipt header, plus a basic configuration review. Moves from an older register, data transfers and large item lists can take more time, which is quoted separately.

Is there help paying for a replacement register?
Eligible approved merchants may qualify for up to $500 in merchant-processing rebate value toward eligible equipment, programming, setup or approved switching costs. Qualification depends on processing volume, approval, program availability and the final package, and no processor change is required to buy a register.

Which manual do you need?
Operating a register and reprogramming it are two different documents.
Find the complete model number on the identification label first, then look for the document that matches the job you are doing. Registers that look alike can use different procedures, so a manual for a neighbouring model is not a substitute. If only one document exists for your model, that is normal for some families.

- Day-to-day selling: ringing items, tenders, voids, opening the drawer, changing paper, and running the reports a manager needs.
- Programming or service manual
- Setup and changes: taxes, departments, PLUs, prices, receipt messages, clerks, keyboard functions and system options.
- Quick reference or setup sheet
- A short guide for first installation and the most common daily tasks. Useful, but rarely enough for programming changes.
- PC utility documentation
- Only relevant if your model is supported by a PC tool and you have the matching cable or interface. Confirm the model before assuming a utility applies.
How paid help works
Straightforward remote support, billed by the block.
Remote support and programming are sold as time blocks, so you only pay for the work the register actually needs. We do not require a service contract, and we do not turn away a register because it was bought from another dealer, bought used, or came with the business.
- $100 per hour for remote support and programming
- $50 for a 30-minute block
- Support hours are Monday to Friday, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM Eastern - there is no 24/7 emergency line
- No contract required; ongoing coverage is available separately
- You do not need to have bought the register from us
What to send us
These are the same details the checkout asks for when you buy a support or programming block, so nothing is wasted.
- Exact model from the label
- Serial number if visible
- Photo of the keyboard
- What the register is doing now
- The change or fix you need
- Connected scanner / drawer / printer models
- Recent changes to the register
