About the ER-260EJ
What it is and who it fits
The ER-260EJ is the raised-key model of the ER-260EJ / ER-265EJ series: a compact, commercial-grade electronic cash register with one thermal receipt printer and an electronic journal held in memory rather than on a second paper roll. Its 15 keyboard PLU keys work like traditional department keys for open-priced entries, or can be set as preset-price keys.
Best fit
- CRS positions the ER-260EJ for retail merchants: retail, gift shops, convenience stores, beer, wine and liquor, specialty food, produce, meat and main-street merchants (manufacturer positioning, LIT-407)
- Counters that ring by keyboard PLU key, with large, easy-to-read key labels
- Stores that scan: not-found PLU registration builds the item file as you go
- Receipt-only printing, with the journal kept electronically and saved or polled to a PC
Consider a different model when
- ER-265EJ if the counter is wet or messy and you want a flat, spill-resistant keyboard. It is the same register otherwise.
- NR-510RBE if you want a larger graphic operator screen and a wider set of documented options.
- ER-925E if you need a much larger keyboard and item file: 21 keyboard PLU keys, expandable to 63, and up to 22,000 PLUs.
These are workflow differences, not quality rankings.
Key features
- One thermal receipt printer. 15 lines per second on 58 mm paper, up to 32 characters per line, with drop-and-print loading. The single station is programmable for receipt or journal printing. Up to a 6-line preamble and 6-line postamble, and an optional graphic logo.
- Electronic journal. Up to 6,900 lines in internal memory and up to 30,000 with SD card storage, archived for printing at end of day, collected on an SD card or USB drive, or polled by a PC using the included eSpresso utility.
- Raised-key keyboard. 31 programmable key locations, of which 15 are keyboard PLU keys. They act like traditional departments for open-priced entries, or can be set as preset-price keys, and the large key size keeps labels easy to read.
- Operator and customer displays. A two-line, 16-character alpha-numeric blue backlit LCD names each item as it is entered, and a rear two-line, 16-character backlit display shows the customer prices and the total.
- Item file. Up to 3,200 PLUs in internal memory, and up to 8,000 when an SD card is used for PLU storage. Up to 5 PLU modifier keys, 2 price levels per PLU and 100 mix and match discounts.
- Scanning. The USB port is documented for a scanner, and not-found PLU registration builds the item file as you scan. Which scanner fits which register
- Card payments. Semi-integrated EMV credit, debit, gift card and EBT processing over the Ethernet port, using Datacap with an appropriate PIN pad and a persistent internet connection. An SD card must be fitted to store transaction records for tip adjustment and voiding. No card information is stored in the register. - Ports and storage. Three RJ45 serial ports, one USB port for a flash drive or scanner, one Ethernet/LAN port documented for the DC Direct payment interface, and an SD slot for saving programs and reports.
- Documented peripherals. Kitchen printer, slip printer, scale, scanner, pole display, kitchen video and video surveillance, plus PC communications with optional polling software.
- Everyday capacity. Up to 500 hard or soft guest checks, up to 99 clerks and 99 group totals, 4 tax rates or tables, 8 charge tender keys, 10 one-touch macros and sales-by-day reporting for 31 days.
- Security and cash control. Voids, reporting and programming are restricted by the manager's key lock, with enforced closed drawer and an open-drawer alarm.

Electronic journal. This register can keep journal records electronically inside the machine rather than only on paper. That is an electronic recordkeeping capability, not an extra print station: it does not add a second built-in printer, and it is not an external kitchen or remote impact printer.

Supplies
This model uses 58 mm (2.25 in) receipt paper. Check the roll diameter your printer accepts as well as the width, since width alone does not guarantee fit.

Coming from an older register?
Older ER-180→ER-180U, ER-260EJ or ER-265EJ
The ER-180U remains a current SAM4S model for straightforward checkout. If the business needs greater item capacity, connectivity, peripherals or reporting, the ER-260EJ or ER-265EJ may be a better current direction; choose keyboard style from the actual workflow.
If the model label says ER-180U, note that the ER-180U is still a current model and confirm whether replacement is actually needed. For an older ER-180 or any true replacement, confirm the exact model, keyboard style, programming, peripherals, payment equipment, reports and data-transfer expectations before ordering. The documented ER-265 (flat spill-resistant keyboard, thermal printer, 1,000 PLUs and an RS-232 port) compares most closely with the current ER-265EJ (flat keyboard, electronic journal, up to 3,200 PLUs in internal memory and 8,000 with SD card storage, RS-232, USB and Ethernet). The older ER-260 is not documented yet, so the raised-key ER-260EJ is an option to discuss rather than a confirmed fit.
